The first European settler known to Sequim was John W. Donnell he found it hard to grow crops due to the rain shadow. The Sequim area averages only approximately 17 inches per year in rain.
Prior to John Donnell Sequim has been inhabited by the James Town S'Klallam tribe for over 10,000 years. The S'Klallam tribe's rich social and religious culture is based on the natural resources of the coast. They continue to be a positive influence in Sequim by providing natural resource management and much of the local health care facilities and high quality physicians.
Sequim has much to offer for those looking for outdoor activities including the popular Lavender Festival and Irrigation Festival. Head down to the local marina for fishing or sailing. The Dungeness River is a popular stop for fly fishing enthusiasts. The Grey Wolf river boasts not only beauty but is also a prime hiking location. The Dungeness Spit is a breathtaking wildlife refuge. A 5 mile hike down the spit will take you to the light house. The light house has a keeper program where you can sign up to be a lighthouse keeper for a week at a time!
Sequim has fantastic dining and shopping from wine to tasty brew! Shops line Washington street with their wares. Local coffee shops bring fabulous coffee from the coveted Rain Shadow coffee roasters!
